SKÆVE BØRN I SMØLFELAND (CROOKED CHILDREN)

The project SKÆVE BØRN I SMØLFELAND revolves around the ways in which personal identity is experienced and created in danish society. The project aims to thematize the concepts of identity, which we utilize, when we encounter personal realities that differ from our own. It reflects on the ways we refer to concepts such as normality and deviation, both in relation to our sense of self and in relation to our perception of others. These themes are reflected in 5 action based works in public space.

The 5 actions, and their underlying ideas and thoughts, are gathered in a book with a special distribution system. One hundred books were handmade and given to 100 people as different from each other as possible - and from all parts of the country. When the first 100 people had read and seen the book, they were asked to pass it on to a new person - who would then read it and pass it on again. This system is an attempt at creating a distribution channel, that will be inherently reactive to the individual experiences of the users and their thoughts - since their personal reactions to the content of the books will determine how (and if) they will be distributed further. Each book will follow its own unique path through the society on which it reflects, thereby hopefully adding yet another social dimension to the project and its subject matter.
